Here is an uncomfortable number from our own enquiries: roughly one in five people who write to us has already done a teacher training somewhere else, and is asking about ours because the first one did not work.

They are not asking for a refund of their time. They are asking for the thing the first course was supposed to give them and did not — the ability to stand in front of a room and teach. If you are choosing a yoga instructor training in India right now, it is worth understanding why that happens, because it is rarely bad luck.

Why so many trainings disappoint

Almost every course covers the same syllabus. Asana, pranayama, anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology. On paper the brochures are interchangeable. The difference is not what is taught — it is how many people are in the room while it is taught.

A hall of thirty-five students and one teacher is a lecture. Nobody adjusts your chaturanga, nobody notices your knee is tracking inward, and nobody asks you to lead a class until the last two days, when it is too late to fix anything. You leave with 200 hours on paper and no reps in front of a room.

The second failure is subject-stacking. One charismatic teacher covering asana, anatomy and philosophy is cheaper to staff, and it shows in the anatomy. Teaching bodies safely requires somebody who has actually studied bodies.

What we do differently at Rudra Yogpeeth

We are not the cheapest school in Rishikesh and we do not try to be. What we hold to is fairly simple:

  • Batches of 15–20. Small enough that a teacher can correct what they can see, and see everyone.
  • A specialist per subject. Asana, pranayama, yoga anatomy, philosophy and teaching methodology are each taught by someone who teaches that thing.
  • Teaching practice from early on, not bolted onto the final week.
  • Residential, on one campus. You eat, sleep and practise with your batch, which is where most of the learning that nobody timetables actually happens.

We have been teaching in Upper Tapovan since 2015. More than 10,000 students from over 60 countries have trained here, and the school is registered as an RYS 200, RYS 300 and RYS 500.

Which course is actually right for you

Most people assume they need the 200-hour. Often they do. Sometimes they do not.

Five questions to ask any school

Ask these of us and of everyone else you are considering. The answers separate schools faster than any review page.

  1. How many students are in a batch? If the answer is vague, it is large.
  2. How many different teachers will I learn from? One is a warning.
  3. When do I first teach in front of the group? Week one or week four tells you everything.
  4. What is the refund policy in writing? Not the reassurance on the call — the clause.
  5. Can I speak to a past student? Any confident school will say yes.

What it really costs, beyond the fee

Course fees in Rishikesh for a 200-hour run roughly from €600 to €1,800. The spread is not about quality alone — it is about what is bundled. Before comparing two numbers, check whether each includes a private or shared room, three meals a day, course materials, excursions and the certificate, because some headline prices include only tuition.

Then add what the brochure never does: flights, visa, travel insurance, a few hundred for the two or three days either side, and laundry. A €700 course and a €1,200 course are often within a couple of hundred of each other once everything is counted.

The thing genuinely worth paying more for is batch size. It is the only variable that cannot be fixed later.

Who we are not right for

If your priority is the lowest possible price, there are schools in Rishikesh that will beat us and you should book one. If you want a holiday with some yoga in it, our 5am start will not suit you. And if you need a flexible, part-time schedule around a job, a residential month in India is the wrong shape — a weekend course at home is better.

We would rather say that now than have you arrive and discover it in week one.
