Yes — you can get a degree in yoga in India. Universities award a BSc and MSc in Yoga, and a few run doctoral programmes. The harder question is whether you need one, and for most people asking, the answer is no.

Quick answer: a degree is for academic, government, school and clinical roles. A 200 hour certification from a registered school is for teaching classes. They cost three years and one month respectively, so picking the wrong one is expensive.

The short answer

People search for a yoga degree because a degree feels like the serious option. In this field that instinct misleads. Yoga teaching in India and abroad is a vocational trade, and the qualification the market recognises is a teacher training certificate, not a BSc.

That does not make the degree lesser. It makes it different, and aimed at a smaller set of jobs that a certificate genuinely cannot reach.

Yes, yoga degrees exist

Several Indian universities run full degree programmes in yoga and yogic science, including S-VYASA in Bengaluru and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga in Delhi.

  • Entry — a completed 10+2. Minimum marks commonly 40–50 per cent; stream requirements vary and some institutions admit by entrance test.
  • Length — three years for a BSc, four in some residential programmes, plus two more for an MSc.
  • Content — philosophy, anatomy and physiology, yoga therapy, research methods and practical teaching, assessed by university examination.

What a degree gets you

  • Government and public-sector posts that specify a graduate qualification.
  • School and college teaching, where a degree is usually the minimum.
  • Clinical and therapeutic work in hospitals and wellness institutions.
  • A research path — an MSc, a PhD, published work.

If your goal is on that list, no certificate substitutes for it. Do the degree.

What a certificate gets you

  • The ability to teach, in a studio, a gym, a retreat or on your own, within about a month.
  • International portability — a 200 hour certificate from a Yoga Alliance registered school is the credential studios abroad recognise on sight.
  • Concentrated teaching practice. A residential month is eight to ten hours a day of structured work, much of it on your feet teaching other students.
  • A decision point that costs a month, not three years.

What it does not get you is an academic qualification. It is not a degree, no school can call it one, and a school that implies otherwise is misleading you.

Indian recognition vs international

This is where most of the confusion sits, so it is worth separating three different things.

  • A university degree is an academic qualification recognised by Indian educational authorities.
  • Yoga Alliance is a United States based voluntary registry, not a government body in any country. It is the standard studios worldwide ask for, which is exactly why it matters. We explain what the letters mean in Yoga Alliance explained.
  • The Yoga Certification Board, under India’s Ministry of Ayush, runs the government’s own certification scheme for yoga professionals. It carries weight for Indian government and institutional roles. Check the current levels and eligibility on the board’s own site before relying on it.

No single one of these is “the valid” certificate. They are valid for different things, and the right question is which doors you are trying to open.

Which one you need

  • Teach classes, here or abroad — 200 hour certification.
  • Government, school or college post — degree, and check whether the role also wants Yoga Certification Board credentials.
  • Yoga therapy in a clinical setting — degree plus a therapy specialisation.
  • Deepen your own practice — a certification, and roughly a third of our students come for exactly this with no plan to teach.
  • Both, eventually — certification first. It is a month, it starts earning, and it tells you whether you want the three years.

Bottom line

Yoga degrees are real, university-issued and the right choice for academic, government and clinical careers. For teaching classes they are the slow road to a destination a one-month certificate reaches. Work out which job you want first; the qualification follows from that, not the other way round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you get a degree in yoga in India?

Yes. Several Indian universities award a BSc and MSc in Yoga or Yogic Science, including S-VYASA in Bengaluru and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga in Delhi. A BSc typically takes three years and requires a completed 10+2, with minimum marks usually between 40 and 50 per cent.

Is a BSc in Yoga worth it?

It is worth it if you want a government post, a school or college teaching job, clinical yoga therapy or a research career, because a certificate cannot reach those roles. If you want to teach classes in studios in India or abroad, a 200 hour certification does the same job in one month instead of three years.

Which yoga certificate is valid in India?

There is no single valid certificate, because different credentials open different doors. Yoga Alliance registration is what studios in India and abroad ask for by name. The Yoga Certification Board under the Ministry of Ayush runs India's own government scheme, which carries weight for government and institutional roles, while university degrees are the academic qualification.

Is Yoga Alliance recognised by the Indian government?

No. Yoga Alliance is a United States based voluntary registry, not a government body in any country, including India. Its value is that studios worldwide treat RYT 200 as the standard teaching credential, which is why it matters for teaching work rather than for government posts.
