How to Become a Yoga Teacher After 12th in India
Table of Contents
To become a yoga teacher after 12th in India you do not need a degree, an entrance exam or a science stream. A 200 hour teacher training from a registered school is enough to teach professionally, and it takes about a month.
Quick answer: if you want to teach in studios, in India or abroad, do a 200 hour course with a Yoga Alliance registered school. If you want a government post, a college teaching job or a research path, you need a university degree instead. Most students asking this question need the first one.
The short answer
Yoga is not a licensed profession in India the way medicine or law is. No law requires a particular qualification to teach a yoga class. What exists instead is a market expectation, and that expectation is a 200 hour certificate.
This surprises students who assume a three-year course is the serious option and a one-month course is the shortcut. For studio teaching it is close to the opposite: the certificate is what employers ask for by name, and the degree is what almost nobody asks about.
The two routes
There are genuinely only two, and they lead to different places.
- Vocational. A 200 hour teacher training, roughly one month residential, after which you can register and teach. Extend later with a 300 hour course if you want.
- Academic. A BSc in Yoga or Yogic Science, typically three years at a university, followed optionally by an MSc or PhD.
They are not competitors so much as answers to different questions. We have set them side by side in detail in yoga degree or teacher training.
Route 1: a 200 hour certification
This is the route most 12th pass students actually want.
- Entry requirement — none academically. No stream requirement, no minimum percentage, no entrance test. Most schools set a minimum age of 18.
- Duration — about 24 days residential for a 200 hour course.
- Cost — wide range. Ours is ₹18,999 all-inclusive, which covers tuition, room, three meals a day and the certificate.
- What you can do after — register as an RYT 200 and teach in studios in India or abroad.
What the month is really doing is teaching you to teach: sequencing, alignment, how to watch a room, how to adjust safely and how to hold a class when it does not go to plan. The asana is the easy part.
Route 2: a yoga degree
Universities including S-VYASA and the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga offer a BSc in Yoga, usually three years.
- Entry requirement — a completed 10+2. Minimum marks vary by institution, commonly 40–50 per cent. Some accept any stream, others want science, and several admit by entrance test or interview.
- Duration — three years, four in some residential programmes.
- What it opens — government and academic posts, school and college teaching, yoga therapy roles in hospitals, and postgraduate study.
If a government job or an academic career is the goal, this is the route. Nothing a one-month course gives you substitutes for it.
Which route for which goal
- Teach at a studio, gym or on your own — 200 hour certification.
- Teach abroad — 200 hour certification from a Yoga Alliance registered school.
- Teach yoga in a school or college, or take a government post — degree.
- Yoga therapy in a clinical setting — degree, then a therapy specialisation.
- Not sure yet, want to start earning while you decide — 200 hour first. It is a month and it does not close the degree route.
That last point matters more than it sounds. A 200 hour course taken at 18 does not rule anything out, and plenty of our students go on to a degree later knowing far better what they want from it.
What you actually need to start
Three myths stop more 12th pass students than any real barrier.
- “I am not flexible enough.” Flexibility is an outcome, not an entry requirement. We have written about doing a teacher training with no experience.
- “I need years of practice first.” A few months of consistent practice is plenty. What matters more is being able to live a disciplined month.
- “I need a science background.” For a certification, no. Anatomy is taught from zero on the course.
What you do need: to be 18, reasonably healthy, and willing to get up at 5:30am for a month.
Bottom line
After 12th, a 200 hour teacher training is the fastest legitimate route into paid yoga teaching, and it is what studios ask for. A degree is the right answer only if you want a government, school or clinical post. Decide which of those you want before you spend three years on the wrong one.
Our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh starts on the 1st of every month, runs 24 days, and costs ₹18,999 all-inclusive — the same fee for Indian and international students. Ask us anything before you book.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I become a yoga teacher right after 12th?
Yes. Yoga teaching is not a licensed profession in India, and a 200 hour teacher training from a registered school is enough to teach professionally. There is no entrance exam, no minimum percentage and no stream requirement, though most schools set a minimum age of 18.
What is the minimum age for a yoga teacher training course?
Most residential teacher training schools in India, including Rudra Yogpeeth, set a minimum age of 18. There is no upper age limit, and batches regularly include students in their fifties and sixties alongside recent school leavers.
Do I need a science stream to do a yoga course after 12th?
Not for a teacher training certification, which has no stream requirement at all. Anatomy and physiology are taught from the beginning on the course. A BSc in Yoga is different: some universities accept any stream while others ask for science, so check each institution.
How long does it take to become a certified yoga teacher?
About a month. A 200 hour residential course takes roughly 24 days, after which you can register as an RYT 200 and teach. A university degree in yoga takes three years and is aimed at academic, school and government roles rather than studio teaching.
