The best months for a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh are February to April and September to November — clear mornings, warm afternoons, and the Ganga at its best.

Quick answer: aim for March or October if you can choose freely. Avoid July and August unless heavy rain does not bother you, and bring serious warm clothes if you come between December and February.

The short answer

Season changes a month here more than the school you pick does. The same course, the same teachers and the same timetable feel entirely different in March and in July.

Rishikesh sits where the Ganga comes out of the Himalayas, so it gets a real winter, a hot pre-monsoon, and a monsoon that arrives properly. Our courses run every month regardless, starting on the 1st — the question is only which version of Rishikesh you want.

Month by month

  • February – April — the best window. Cold mornings warming into clear days, the river running green, everything comfortable. Batches fill first, so book early.
  • May – June — hot. Temperatures can reach 40°C, and the afternoon self-study block becomes the time you are glad to be indoors. Early practice is lovely; midday is not.
  • July – August — monsoon. Warm, wet, green, and far quieter. Cheaper flights, fewer students, and a genuine chance of several days of rain in a row.
  • September – November — the second best window, and many people's favourite. The monsoon has washed everything clean, the air is clear and the hills are at their greenest.
  • December – February — cold, quiet and beautiful. Roughly 15–26°C, which sounds mild until you are in an unheated room at 5:30am.

Winter: the part nobody warns you about

We do not provide room heaters, and nor do most schools in Rishikesh. That is worth reading twice if you are coming from a centrally heated country.

December to February is genuinely cold in the mornings and evenings. The days are pleasant, the sky is clear and the town is peaceful, but you will want thermals, a warm layer for the 6:30am pranayama session, and socks you do not mind practising in.

People who come prepared tend to love winter here — smaller batches, more attention, and a stillness the busy months do not have. People who pack for an Indian summer have a miserable first week.

Monsoon: cheap for a reason

July and August are the cheapest months to fly, and the least crowded. They are also the months when a week of rain can reshape the whole experience.

The practice continues indoors, so the course itself is unaffected. What changes is everything around it: the beach sessions by the Ganga, the excursions, the long evening walks. The river runs high, fast and brown rather than green, and swimming is out of the question.

If the teaching is what you came for, monsoon is a reasonable trade. If you pictured sunrise on the sand, it is not.

When to actually book

  • For February–April or September–November — book two to four months ahead. These batches fill, and flights into Delhi rise sharply as the date approaches.
  • For monsoon or winter — you can book much later and usually find space.
  • Arrive a day early whatever the season. The course opens at 10am on day one, and a 6am practice on no sleep is a poor start.

Bottom line

February to April and September to November are the comfortable months and the ones worth booking ahead for. Winter is beautiful and genuinely cold with no room heaters; monsoon is cheap, quiet and wet. The course does not change — the town around it does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best month for a yoga teacher training in Rishikesh?

February to April and September to November are the most comfortable months, with clear mornings and warm afternoons. March and October are the two most popular, so those batches fill first and are worth booking two to four months ahead.

Is Rishikesh cold in winter?

Yes. December to February runs roughly 15 to 26C, and most schools in Rishikesh including ours do not provide room heaters. Bring thermals and a warm layer for the 6:30am pranayama session.

Can you do a yoga teacher training during monsoon in Rishikesh?

You can, and courses run right through July and August. The teaching is unaffected because it is indoors, but the beach sessions and excursions are, the Ganga runs high and brown, and several consecutive days of rain are likely. Flights are cheapest then.

How hot does Rishikesh get in summer?

Temperatures can reach 40C in May and June. Early morning practice is pleasant, the afternoon self-study block is when you are glad to be indoors, and light cotton clothing is essential.
